On Friday, April 30, Washington, D.C. (CNA), Taiwan provided a variety of commodities to one of its diplomatic allies, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG), to aid disaster relief operations following a large volcanic eruption.
11,000 surgical face masks, 390 blankets, a variety of baby goods, and everyday essentials were among the goods supplied by the Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce of Miami (TCCM), the Tzu Chi Foundation, and the Junior Chamber International Taiwan.
The donation was given to Saint Lucia Consul General in Miami Tassa Jean on behalf of the SVG government on Friday by Amino Chi (), Director of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Miami.
At the ceremony, Jean expressed her gratitude to Taiwan for the beautiful donation, which comes when the people of SVG are in desperate need of help.
According to Jean, the supplies would be sent to SVG’s National Emergency Management Office via Saint Lucia.
On the other hand, Taiwan has a responsibility as a member of the world community to help with international disaster relief, according to Chi.
On April 9, the volcano La Soufrière in the Caribbean country of SVG erupted violently, sending ash, smoke, and sulphur dioxide hundreds of meters into the air.
An estimated 20,000 individuals, including 5,000 children, were forced to flee their homes in the danger zones.
During the past three weeks, more than 3,000 of them have been sheltered in government shelters, while most others have been placed with private people due to ongoing eruptions and concomitant issues like severe floods.
For nearly 40 years, SVG and Taiwan have had diplomatic relations that have never been broken.
SVG and Taiwan have maintained unbroken diplomatic relations for almost 40 years.
