WHO wants wealthier nations to donate vaccines instead of immunizing children

Date:

WHO tried to persuade wealthy nations recently to revisit arrangements to children’s immunization in favor of donating COVID-19 vaccines to the COVAX plan, which distributes them to developing countries.

The World Health Organization hopes that more states should follow Sweden and France in making donations of COVID vaccines to the COVAX program after immunizing their prioritized population groups to help bridge the global gaps in vaccination rollouts.
Canada and the U.S. are two of the states which have recently approved immunization shots for children and teens. That being said, a WHO official stated that talks with the United States about donating doses were ongoing.

Addressing a virtual conference in Geneva, WHO’s Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus was quoted saying that he knows why certain nations wish to vaccinate their teenagers and children, but he insisted that for the time being, everyone should rethink their strategies and instead contribute vaccine shots to the #COVAX relief program.

COVAX program, which has so far provided more than 60 million vaccine doses to date, has failed to reach procurement objectives, mainly due to India’s limitations on exporting the license-produced AstraZeneca vaccine as a result of their expanding pandemic at home.

Worldwide, over 1.26 billion dosages have been used in COVID vaccination programs have been delivered and successfully inoculated.

WHO director, Tedros also predicted that the second year of the epidemic was more likely to be lethal than the initial one, with India being a major worry.

Narendra Modi, India’s premier recently raised the concern about the fast spread of the virus throughout India’s vast rural areas and consequences it will have for the world, as the government’s national figure for illnesses due to COVID surpassed a staggering 24 million for the third day in a row and over 4,000 deaths. These deaths are ones that were recorded at hospitals.

The concerning thing about India’s situation is that according to many experts, the actual number of deaths and coronavirus patients is much higher than official numbers since the medical facilities in many regions have been crippled for days.

As per Reuters, upwards of 160.71 million individuals have been estimated to be infected with the coronavirus worldwide, while causing about 3.5 million deaths on record.

When COVID cases were first discovered in China during December 2019, outbreaks were recorded in over 210 countries around the world.

World Health Organization’s authorities recommended prudence in relaxing transmission-control restrictions, like as facemask use, and cautioned that new variations will inevitably be discovered.

According to America’s CDC, completely vaccinated persons are not bound to wear masks outside and may stop wearing them inside closed doors in most situations.

According to Chief Scientist, Soumya Swaminathan, very few nations have reached the stage in which they can let go of these restriction in a complete manner up till now.
