UN cautions on huge number of states without vaccines for COVID

Date:

The Secretary General of UN has issued a warning about a number of countries missing COVID-19 vaccinations and slammed rising nationalism on the subject.

Guterres stated during the 27th Ibero-American Summit of Heads of State and Government, which took place in the Italian city of Andorra, that the epidemic is the “biggest moral challenge of modern time,” and he urged all countries to work together to combat the epidemic.

Many low-income, developing nations have not even gotten a single vaccine dosage, which significantly slows global rebound and jeopardizes the vaccination effort.

Similarly, Guterres emphasized the pandemic’s substantial impact on South America and the Caribbean islands, a part of the world that has already accounted for 25 percent of worldwide mortality caused by COVID-19.

He described how the region’s average gross domestic product (GDP) fell as well, with a gigantic 7.4 percent drop, the largest recession since 1821.

He emphasized that Latin America and the Caribbean region face the possibility of regressing many years back in terms of progress, with particularly catastrophic consequences for the most disadvantaged segments of their societies.

Guterres also mentioned the World Health Organization’s COVAX initiative, which aims to reduce disparities in vaccine manufacturing and distribution efforts.

‘The international community must work together to create and deliver vaccinations for everybody,’ Guterres said, requesting that vaccine production output to be doubled since vaccination is where our hope for a quick recovery rests.
